BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — As crowds gathered for the first Boston Marathon in two and a half years, Benson Kipruto of Kenya won the Men's Elite Division Monday. With a time of 2:09:51, this is Kipruto's first Boston win, and he crossed the finish line at Copley at 10:45 a.m..

Around 45 seconds later 2nd and 3rd place were won by Lemi Berhanu with a time of 2:10:37 and Jemal Yimer with a time of 2:10:38, both runners from Ethiopia.

The top American in the Race was Bennie Colin, who came in 7th with a time of 2:11:26.

Kipruto won the Prague Marathon earlier this year and Toronto in 2018. He finished 10th at the 2019 Boston Marathon.

Monday's 125th Boston Marathon is the first on the usual route since Patriots Day 2019 and the first to ever happen in fall. Runners were socially distanced, with the field trimmed by around 40%. There was a smaller, virtual marathon last year.

The best-ever Boston Marathon men's time was set in 2011 by Kenyan runner Geoffrey Mutai, with a time of 2:03:01.
