The long weekend has decided to go out with a bang as New England is dealing with a wintry mix the morning of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Special Weather Statement for about half of Massachusetts. A heavy mix of rain and snow with gusty winds between 40 and 70 miles per hour will continue to batter the state throughout the morning.
These conditions will impact portions of Windham, eastern Tolland, Norfolk, Essex, Middlesex, south central Nantucket, central Dukes, Barnstable, Bristol, Suffolk, Worcester, eastern Hampden and Plymouth.
In addition, portions of north and central Massachusetts may still see some wintry precipitation that could accumulate between three to four inches in most areas and six to eight in others. There has also been a Special Marine Warning issued for Nantucket
The winds could cause minor damage such as downed branches and the heavy downpours could lead to poor drainage and local flooding. In addition, the NWS is advising drivers to slow down and not drive through flooded roadways.
Temperatures will mostly revolve around 30s and 40s. Lows tonight will be in the 20s, so potential freezing overnight could also be an issue.
As of 8:30 Monday morning, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has reported more than 14,000 customers without power.
