A Georgia man has been charged in connection to the death of his wife that had initially been reported to have died by suicide.

Troy Newton Scarborough, of Gray, was charged with felony murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the Jones County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a post shared on its Facebook account (h/t NBC News).

Scarborough had already been in custody since late March for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon when police began investigating the death of his wife, Shyanne Schroeder.

Schroeder was found with a gunshot wound to the head on March 27 and Scarborough claimed the death was by suicide, but responding deputies "got the feeling that something wasn’t right about this case, and thankfully they trusted their instincts."

Officers later determined that Scarborough was responsible for Schroeder's death and handed down the aforementioned charges.

"I would like to thank our investigators and deputies for all their hard work, without which there may have been a huge miscarriage of justice," said Jones County Sheriff R.N. “Butch” Reece, also thanking the FBI for its assistance in the investigation in the Facebook post.

Scarborough is currently being held without bail in Jones County.

NBC News reports it attempted to reach the suspect's representation for comment but didn't immediately receive a response at the time of publication on Sunday (May 1).
