BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts schools jumped more than 60% in the latest weekly update from DESE Thursday.
Education officials said, in the week from May 5th to May 11th, 17,423 COVID cases were reported to the state by K-12 schools. The week before there were 10,715 cases reported, marking a 61.5% increase.
Of the more than 17,000 COVID this past week, 13,380 students tested positive, making up 1.45% of the student population.
4,043 staff members tested positive — 2.89% of all Massachusetts staffers.
The numbers are voluntarily reported to the state by public, private, and charter schools.
