BARNSTABLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cape Cod’s bus transit system, the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, has been hit with a cyberattack just over a year after a ransomware attack rocked the Steamship Authority.
“Over the memorial day weekend we received an email indicating that someone had encrypted our files,” says CCRTA Administrator Tom Cahir. Cahir says it doesn’t appear the attackers gained access through a phishing email, as is commonly seen in ransomware incidents.
The CCRTA has been able to avert any major service disruptions, Cahir says, “by having our wonderful staff folks working round the clock to create paper manifests where technology can no longer be accessed.”
The F.B.I. and Massachusetts State Police are investigating. Cahir says authorities have indicated the attacker could be foreign-based, though that has not been confirmed.
