Are you a die-hard football fan? Do you know all the details about your favorite team, like how it got its name?
Stacker tells the stories of how each NFL team got its name. The website states, "Some names were chosen by fan contests, while others had ties to former professional sports teams."
According to Stacker, the Arizona Cardinals have had their name for almost 100 years. The team was previously named the Chicago Cardinals, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Phoenix Cardinals. Here's the story:
"Despite locations in three cities, the Cardinals have kept the same name for almost 100 years. The team initially bought used football jerseys from the University of Chicago, garments that faded over time. Chris O'Brien, the team's founder, named the new shade "Cardinal red." The Cardinals have never won a Super Bowl, coming closest with the combo of championship- veteran quarterback Kurt Warner and dynamic receiver Larry Fitzpatrick during the 2008 season. That NFC title run ended with a Super Bowl XLIII loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers."
