BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Ceremonies and celebrations are taking place across the commonwealth today in honor of Veterans Day.

A big parade is being held in Brockton this morning. It began at the war memorial on Elm Street and concluded with a ceremony at the Brockton City Hall amphitheater.

Veterans, law enforcement, the fire department, and Brockton High's brightest marched through the streets to honor those who've served.

A special supply drive is being held in Hull, gathering gifts for veterans at the Brockton V.A. who aren't going home for the holidays. Until 1 p.m., members of the public can drop off gifts at Daddy's Beach Club on Nantasket Ave. Organizer Craig Wolf says items including stocking stuffers, non-skid slippers, games, art supplies, stationary, playing cards, socks, hats, and mittens would be appreciated.

Elsewhere on the South Shore, Whitman, Abington, and Rockland are holding their tri-town Veterans Day parade in Whitman. Halifax is holding its annual Veterans Day celebration on the steps on town hall and will officially be recognized as a Purple Heart town.

The Boston chapter of Veterans For Peace gathered this morning for a peace vigil and bell ringing to commemorate the end of World War 1.

Lowell Police are unveiling a new traffic enforcement cruiser honoring veterans. The department says 61 of their officers are US military veterans, and the new cruiser is a display of their respect for those who've made sacrifices for us all.

And the Animal Rescue League is announcing a new program this Veterans Day. The partnership with the New England Center and Home for Veterans will ensure pet-owning vets get the help they need to keep veterans and their pets together.

Veterans Day, Originally Armistice Day, commemorates the end of World War 1 and serves as a day to honor the sacrifices made by US Veterans.
