BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - Students at East Boston High School got the chance to meet a Red Sox legend. Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez visited students Thursday, along with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, to talk to students about the importance of academics, athletics and to never give up on their dreams.
"I was 154 pounds and could have used steroids to get a lot bigger, but I didn't." Martinez said "I did it the right way. I was clean and that's why I'm here today.... Never shy away from what you want and never let anybody tell you that you can't."
East Boston High has one of the highest percentages of English language learned in the city's public school system. Martinez congratulated students on a significant increase in MCAS scores over the last three years, despite the challenges of remote learning, prompted by the global pandemic.
Martinez also took the time to shake the hands of the schools baseball team, who recently won it's first city league championship since 1991.
