BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - If you're hitting the road over Thanksgiving, you won't be alone. AAA reports 55 million Americans will be traveling more than 50 miles over the holiday, making it the third-busiest Thanksgiving since the organization began tracking data in 2000.

So when should you hit the road to avoid the crowds? Wednesday will be the heaviest travel day, especially in the afternoon as everyone takes off for the long-weekend. If you need to drive on Wednesday, AAA suggests leaving before 8 a.m. or after 8 p.m.

Thursday, Thanksgiving day, will be the lightest travel day.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said this year, planning ahead will be crucial for travel during the holiday week. The Sumner Tunnel will remain open the weekend after Thanksgiving due to anticipated traffic volume.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is encouraging people to plan ahead for travel during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday week.
