WEYMOUTH (WBZNewsRadio) - Hidden in Lara Brait's pocket is a reminder that her late father-in-law is always with her. In a small glass vial lives a print out of his final heartbeat, as recorded by EKG, with a simple message, "My heart is with you, always."
The small keepsake has become a big tradition for nurses at South Shore Hospital's Critical Care Unit.
"After he passed away one of the nurses had shared it with me, she brought it over and it was really nice to receive something." Brait said.
Michelle Peterson is the coordinator of the keepsake program and a critical nurse working in the unit. She told WBZ's Jim MacKay the small keepsake tends to bring everyone together with a physical reminder of life and love.
"I can just feel the sadness... and I immediately hand them out and it just changes everyone's mood for that moment." She said. "100% of the time everybody is smiling, hugging, thanking."
