BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - What's in a name? Turns out, more than you might think. Ancestry.com recently compiled it's data on the most popular surnames across the country and found Smith, Johnson, Miller, Jones, Williams, and Anderson on top of the list.
Here in Massachusetts, Smith, Johnson and Sullivan reign supreme as the most common last names. Ancestry.com notes we are the only state where Sullivan made it into the top three, all thanks to our large Irish population.
When it comes to the rest of New England, Smith, Johnson and Brown made the top three for Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The website also found a number of regional differences. For example, you're more likely to meet an Anderson than a Brown in the Northwest, versus the East Coast.
Looking at the Southwestern part of the country, Ancestry.com found a sweeping variety with names like Garcia, Hernandez, Martinez, and Chavez. Hawaii is an entirely different story, with names like Lee, Wong, and Kim, all earning the top spot for the state.
