CANTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — When it comes to gel ball blaster guns, the Canton Police Department says there's been a spike in incidents across town involving kids shooting people with the popular toy guns that use "Orbeez" balls as bullets.

What began as a social media challenge has spiraled into something more dangerous, with some kids reported to be freezing the gel bullets to make them hit harder on their targets. Canton Police reminded the public that Orbeez guns could be mistaken for an actual firearm, and has the potential to cause mass panic in certain environments.

As it stands, the toy guns are banned from all property owned by the Town of Canton, including fields, the town library, school grounds, and school buses.

Those who violate the rules could face criminal charges, police say.
