GEORGETOWN (WBZNewsRadio) - Two residents were hurt, one with serious injuries, after a fire in a home in Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon.
The Georgetown fire department responded to the home on North St. around 12:19 p.m. and found smoke billowing from the building. Two residents were injured. One declined treatment on scene and the other was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The family's cat did not survive.
Authorities say the home was cluttered, making the fire in the basement difficult to reach. Officials struck a second-alarm to get more manpower to the scene.
"An aggressive fire attack by the first arriving companies helped prevent this fire from spreading further, and I am grateful for their quick and professional work," said Georgetown Fire Chief Matt McKay. "I would also like to thanks all of mutual aid partners who responded quickly to our request for assistance."
When all was said and done, firefighters from Haverhill, Groveland, Boxford, Rowley, West Newbury, and Newbury all assisted in the fight.
After suffering fire damage in the basement and smoke and water damage on the first floor, the home is a total loss and the family of three will be displaced.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
