BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — During lunch break at Mattahunt Elementary School on Thursday a verbal and physical altercation, involving someone on the school's payroll, began in the cafeteria.

According to a letter from the school's principal Walter Henderson, students witnessed the incident and Boston Public Schools Safety Services has been contacted. Henderson urged students who saw the ordeal to voice their concerns and ask questions at the end of the school day.

The principal says school leadership will look into the incident before taking any potentially "appropriate actions."

From the letter it was not made clear who was involved in the altercation with the staff member.

"While personnel matters are confidential, please know that all BPS staff is held to the highest standard of professional conduct, and that misconduct is never tolerated," Henderson wrote.

The principal concludes the letter with a contact number, saying the reasoning behind the correspondence was to stay open and transparent to the community.
