MAYNARD, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - A group of Maynard Police Officers and Maynard Firefighters have been recognized for their efforts to save a man's life in April.
Three Police Officers and five Firefighters were presented an award during a Select Board meeting by none other than the man they saved, William Doyle.
It was back on April 8, when authorities responded to a home and discovered an unresponsive Doyle. Police officers immediately began to perform CPR compressions. When firefighters arrived, they took over compressions with an Automatic External Defibrillator. He was rushed to the hospital and due to the quick actions of these heroic first responders, he was alert and talking when he arrived at the emergency room.
Medical professionals determined Doyle had suffered a massive heart attack.
Police Sgt. Trista Manchuso, Officers Eric Davoll and Kristin Gates, Fire Capt. John King, and Firefighters James McGowan, Ryan Johanson, Mark Latta, and Jack Primiano were honored at the ceremony on June 6 for their combined efforts.
Maynard Police Chief Michael Noble and Fire Chief Angela Lawless both spoke of the bravery and fearlessness of these first responders. They also highlighted how cardiopulmonary resuscitation alone is only successful in about 5 to 10 percent of patients who've suffered a serious cardiac event.
Doyle was able to thank the first responders for saving his life and said he'd built relationships with Maynard public safety employees through out the years but never thought they would someday save his life.
“You know the percentage, the chance I had to live through everything, and the incredible efforts that you guys put in. It is just overwhelming, and I cannot thank you enough. My life is still going. I have a lot to do. Thank you so much for this second opportunity, I cannot again thank you enough,” said Doyle.
