BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Wildlife officials need your help with their annual wild turkey count in the Commonwealth.
Between June 1 and Aug. 31, MassWildlife monitors wild turkey reports to help biologists study the species. Researchers look at everything from productivity, to long-term reproductive success, along with estimating the potential fall harvest.
Officials are encouraging the public to familiarize themselves with the difference between hens (female turkeys), poults (newly-hatched turkeys), jakes (juvenile males), and toms (adult males). By reporting specific turkey sightings, scientists can better understand the growth of the current local population.
Turkey sightings can be submitted online and this year, the form has been tweaked to provide more accurate location information. To report a sighting you can do so, here.
