BILLERICA, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - The Billerica Police department is launching a free and voluntary Personal Alert Program, designed to help first responders with patients with disabilities, specifically those who may have trouble communicating.

The program provides first responders crucial information, including emergency contacts, physical descriptions, communication abilities, routines, behaviors, and other information that may be useful in the chance of an emergency. Those on the Autism spectrum, those suffering from Dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or Downs Syndrome, along with elderly community members are encouraged to sign up for the free program.

Those who sign up will get a free Billerica Police department patch, a special seat belt cover, window decal, and an BPD Personal Alert Program identification card.

“I want to thank Telecommunicator Supervisor Maureen Lamaree for her work to get this program launched. She has been instrumental to our efforts on this,” said Chief Roy Frost. “We’re hoping a large number of community members will enroll in this program to help improve our ability to be of assistance in the event of the emergency."
