NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - The beach is open but visitors won't be able to frolic in the waves of Newburyport, after more testing reveals high levels of bacteria at all Plum Island beaches.
Swimming at the beaches was originally closed on Friday, July 14, and follow-up testing performed earlier this week found the average bacteria levels for the last five tests were well above the state's allowable limit. Next the city will monitor water quality, testing several different samples of water through out Wednesday and Thursday.
The public is welcome at the beach during the closure, as long as visitors stay out of the water.
