AUBURN, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - "Lock your cars every single night," that's the latest message from Auburn police, who are providing more details in a string of car break-ins that took place at the end of last month.
It all started back on June 26th, when police began looking into reports of several car break-ins in the Pakachoag and Central Street neighborhood between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Surveillance video from residents show a person riding a BMX bicycle, going from house to house, checking car door handles for any easy access. Another neighbor called police after noticing a suspicious car in the area and gave officers the license plate number. The plate came back as stolen and a BMX bicycle was found.
Based on previous investigative information, officers were able to make a connection and identify a suspect. When authorities visited the area of Worcester where their suspect lived, officers watched as the suspect parked the stolen car on a side street.
A later search of the vehicle revealed dozens of items that had been stolen from Worcester and Shrewsbury, including cell phones, purses, credit cards, house keys and a wedding ring worth roughly $13,500. Police also found 9mm and 45 cal. ammunition and a loaded firearm magazine.
As of 9:15 a.m. this morning, they have a suspect in custody after they were involved in a police-chase in another community. The suspect expected to face theft and firearm possession charges.
