HINGHAM, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - As one lucky California resident wins $1.8 Billion in the most recent Powerball drawing, a Hingham man is out thousands in what police are calling a "lottery winning phone scam."

Hingham police said the 84-year-old man began getting phone calls in June. The caller told him, he'd won a million dollars but needed to pay the taxes before he could receive his winnings. Over the next few weeks, the man received additional calls from the same caller, asking him to send a number of checks, claiming the money was ultimately going to the IRS.

After cashing a handful of checks, the caller changed their tune, telling the victim their winnings had increased to $2.5 Million and therefore he owed more in taxes to claim the winnings.

In all, the victim sent $24,000 through nine or ten checks, all sent overnight delivery to New York.
