MARBLEHEAD, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - A ban on gas leaf blowers in Marblehead is now in effect and town officials are urging residents to report violations.

In a letter sent to residents earlier this week, Police Chief Dennis King, Health Agent Andrew Petty and Town Administrator Thatcher Kezer III, wrote "the bylaw and enforcement mechanism are both in place and will allow for violations to be addressed."

Ahead of the ban which prohibits use of gas leaf blowers between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the town clerk needed to post the bylaw in all six of the town's precincts, as well as the town's website.

The first violation comes with a written warning, the second carries a $100 fine, and $200 for a third. Homeowners will be held responsible for violation fines and landscapers found in violation will be asked to stop using the gas-powered machine.
