BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - It's set to be a scorcher over the next few days, with temperatures hitting 90 or more in many places across Massachusetts. Officials are encouraging people to limit their time outside, stay hydrated and check on your neighbors.

When it comes to Fido, the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) is out with a reminder for all pet owners to make sure your animals are comfortable and safe during the extreme heat.

The ARL released basic guidelines to keep your pets safe:

  • Prevention is critical. The ARL encourages pet owners to leave their animals at home in a cool humidity and temperature-related room.
  • If your pet is outdoors, shade will be your best friend.
  • Hydration is crucial. The ARL recommends making sure a bowl of cold water is accessible.
  • Limit your animal's exercise to morning or evening hours when it's coolest outside.
  • Watch where you step. Certain surfaces including asphalt, concrete and brick can absorb the heat and reach more than 145 degrees. Best rule of thumb, if it feels too hot for you, it's too hot for your pooch.
  • Never leave your dog alone in a parked car, even with the air conditioner running or the windows cracked.

On Tuesday, Boston Mayor, Michelle Wu, declared a heat emergency will be in effect for the city, starting Thursday, July 27, through Friday, July 28. A heat advisory has also been issued starting Wednesday through Saturday.

"This summer is an opportunity for Boston residents to have fun and stay active together--but this is only possible when our community comes together to take necessary precautions to stay safe from extreme heat," Mayor Wu said in a statement. "Heat waves can endanger anyone, regardless of age or health, and it is critical for everything to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity when possible, and wear plenty of sunscreen."
