STURBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Authorities said a car explosion in Sturbridge over the weekend may have been caused by "huffing."

The Fire Department responded to reports of an explosion on Charlton Road, near Walmart, just before 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 22. When crews arrived they found the sedan with it's windows blown out. A woman was treated for minor injuries on scene but refused further evaluation at the hospital.

Authorities suspect the woman may have been inside the car, "huffing," with the windows rolled up. She then allegedly tried to light a cigarette, which set off an explosion.

"Often times these fumes are highly flammable. The buildup of these fumes inside the car followed by the attempt to light the cigarette appears to have caused an explosion resulting in the injuries to the female and the damage to the vehicle and surrounding vehicles." Sturbridge Police wrote in a statement.

Although several other cars were damaged in the area, no other injuries were reported.
