BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - It's hot and humid out there, but at Zoo New England, the animals are staying cool.
During extreme heat, staff at both Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo make sure to keep a close eye on the animals in the heat, especially those from other parts of the world. Ice treats are a favorite for the animals, but this isn't your average freeze-pop. The frozen treats are made up of regular parts of the animals' diet as well as some novel foods to simulate the animals senses.
Many of the animals' enclosures have pools, but additional misters have been put in place, and ample shade provided for the creatures.
At Franklin Park in Boston, the gorillas have been feasting on ice treats of fruit juice and fresh berries. Inside the Tropical Forest habitat, the ring-tailed lemurs have been chowing down on ice treats with frozen bugs.
Meantime over at Stone zoo, the staff are providing "bloodcicles" and frozen fruit to their animals including snow leopards and black bears. Misters and fans are keeping the reindeer, wolves and yak comfortable in the heat. Luckiest of all perhaps is the puma and jaguar, who have air conditioned off-exhibit areas.
