DARMOUTH, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - A trio of Dartmouth police officers were sent to the hospital after being exposed to toxic chemical fumes while on a call.
Officers responded to a home on Matthew Street, Wednesday morning just before 9:30 a.m. for a well-being check. As officers were assisting the resident, three of them became overwhelmed by a strong smell. The group immediately started to feel dizzy, complained of sore throats, irritated eyes and noses, as well as headaches.
It was later determined the strong smell was created by a combination of several materials mixed together inside the home. Both Dartmouth Fire Department and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to the scene and determined while the home had several noxious chemicals inside, all were found to be legal.
The three officers were taken to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford where they were treated and released.
“Though this incident didn’t involve a traditional weapon, such as a gun or knife, it is a shining example of one of the many other dangers that my officers face on a daily basis." Said Police Chief Brian Levesque. "I’m extremely pleased that this incident didn’t end tragically and that my officers were able to return home to their families both healthy and unharmed.”
