165 New Massachusetts State Police Troopers Graduate In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Massachusetts State Police have 165 new troopers after the 88th Recruit Training Troop was officially sworn in this week.

The group successfully finished more than five months of training at the State Police Academy in Braintree, next the graduates will be start their assignments at barracks across the Commonwealth. During the first three months on the job, the new Troopers will be paired with a veteran Field Training Officer.

"I deeply appreciate that you are stepping up to meet this challenge." Governor Maura Healy said during the ceremony, adding public safety is imperative to the state's success across the board.

Addressing the group, Colonel John Mawn Jr., asked them to act with moral and physical courage, and to communicate professionalism, compassion and dignity. He asked the graduates to remember above all else, most of the people they'll be interacting with through out their careers are having a bad day.

"The 88th RTT graduating class is comprised of 143 males and 22 females. Seventy-five of the new Troopers have some prior service with other law enforcement agencies, and 33 have prior military service. Twenty-five graduates are fluent in a second language, including Spanish, Portuguese, Creole, and Vietnamese." Massachusetts State Police said.
