BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - It's finally upon us, welcome to Tax-Free Weekend here in Massachusetts, where shoppers will be spared the extra 6.25% from the bill.
Here's the deal, customers here in the Bay State, will be able to purchase retail items tax-free, as long as they're under $2,500. Of course there are a number of exceptions, from marijuana to alcohol, motor vehicles and meals. And if you do end up buying something over that $2,500 limit, you will be taxed for the entire price, not just the dollar amount over the limit. The catch? If you buy a number of items and your total exceeds $2,500, you'll still be able to take it home, tax-free.
List of items that do not qualify:
- Meals
- Motor vehicles
- Motorboats
- Telecommunications services
- Gas
- Steam
- Electricity
- Tobacco products
- Marijuana or marijuana products
- Alcoholic beverages
- Any single item whose price is more than $2,500
Another exception? The item must be for personal use, items bought by corporations or businesses, or purchased by individuals for business use.
Out and about Friday morning, WBZ's Shari Small discovered most of the people she spoke to had no idea Tax-Free weekend was happening. Others knew exactly what they'd be spending their hard earned cash on.
"Maybe I'll buy a new desktop monitor, I work from home so... maybe I'll do that," one woman said. Another said she waits to do her back to school shopping for her kids, until this weekend.
