WESTFIELD, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Authorities are asking for the public's help following a fire on a railroad freight car, deemed suspicious by investigators.

“We are asking anyone with information on last night’s fire to contact Westfield Police detectives at 413-572-6400,” said Westfield Police Chief Valliere. “Anyone who observed people or vehicles near the train tracks north of Notre Dame Street yesterday evening may have information that could help us.”

The fire department responded to the tracks in the area of 181 Notre Dame Street just after 6:45 p.m. There, they found a freight car on fire, doors open with bright orange flames visible. Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control but the flames caused major damage to the railcar. As investigators began examining the scene, they discovered signs of forced entry and property damage.

“Every fire is dangerous,” said State Fire Marshal Jon Davine. “We’re very fortunate that no one was injured last night, but if that fire had spread we could have seen a serious risk to the community. If you have any information on how it started, please share it with investigators.”

The investigation is ongoing.
