FAA Investigating After Large Ice Chunk Damages Home In Shirley

SHIRLEY, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Jeff Ilg and his wife, Amelia Rainville got quite the surprise Sunday night, when what appeared to be an ice chunk, fell through the roof of their home.

Luckily neither of them, nor their children were hurt by the chunk, which Ilg estimates was 15-20 pounds. The couple said when they heard the impact, they initially thought the house had been struck by lightning. The couple now suspects the ice fell off an airplane on it's way to Logan International Airport and the FAA has opened an investigation.

Ilg said when he first heard the sound, he and Rainville raced outside to see what had happened. That's when they spotted ice chunks all over the yard, roof, and a large hole in the roof tiles. They quickly ran back inside to investigate the hole and discovered significant damage.

The pair began collecting ice chunks from the yard, including one the "size of a cantaloupe", according to Ilg.

Ilg said he's reached out to JetBlue but they have not returned his messages. And while the FAA has been in contact with the couple, Ilg said he's hoping to get an update from the FAA sooner rather than later.

"A family in Delaware reached out to me this am." Ilg said "They had the same thing happen to them Sunday morning."
