STURBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Sturbridge police are out with a warning to the general public and local businesses, saying there's been a recent surge in counterfeit bills in local circulation.

"Please be on the lookout for counterfeit bills." Police wrote on their social media. "Most of the fakes have been 20 dollars bills with no watermark."

Authorities are asking the public to check the bills in their wallet, including the specific serial number. Businesses should check serial numbers, especially when receiving multiple $20 bills.

"If you receive multiple 20 dollar bills in the same transaction, and more than one of them has the same serial number, this is a really good indication you are dealing with counterfeit money."

Just last month, authorities in Raymond, New Hampshire, authorities released a similar warning. Police said the bills they had collected in the community were all $20 bills and had the words "copy," replica," or "for motion picture use only," printed on them.
