PORTLAND, Maine (WBZNewsRadio) - This weekend, a number of historical lighthouses up and down Maine's coast will open their doors to the public for Maine Open Lighthouse Day.
Saturday's annual Open Lighthouse Day is made possible by the United States Coast Guard, the Maine Office of Tourism and the American Lighthouse Foundation. More than two dozen facilities both on-shore and off-shore, will be open to the public, and yes, visitors will be able to climb all the spiral staircases their hearts desire.
"The mission of the American Lighthouse Foundation is to save and preserve our nation's historic light stations and their rich heritage." The American Lighthouse Foundation wrote on it's website "This will be accomplished through the restoration, promotion and adaptive re-use of America's historic light stations, as well as educational initiatives that foster the sustainable preservation of lighthouses and perpetuate the legacy of the men and women who have tended them."
Here is a list of participating lighthouses, the closest is just about a two hour drive from Boston. The furthest, is about a six hour drive.
