LAWRENCE, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - The streets of Lawrence are a little safer state and local authorities conducted a joint operation to thwart the illegal operation of dirt bikes and ATVs around the community.

Seven people were arrested, 10 others are being summonsed to face criminal charges and almost 20 vehicles were taken off the streets.

"The operation of off-road vehicles on city streets, often driven recklessly, causes a significant safety threat to motorists and pedestrians." Massachusetts State Police wrote on their website. "Complaints of dirt bike and ATV operation on Lawrence streets have increased in recent years."

Joining in the operation, the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing was able to spot several off-road vehicles being used illegally on city streets, as well as give clear instructions to teams on the ground. The crew in the air was also able to help catch fleeing operators, who may have been able to hide their vehicles from the roadway, but not from the eyes in the skies.
