BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — This past week, Friends of Martin’s Park hosted their 1st Annual Teddy Bear Picnic Week, putting a spotlight on their smallest sunflower.

The Teddy Bear Sunflower is just one of the fifteen variations of sunflowers displayed at Martin’s Park, but its small stature was perfect for Friends of Martin’s Park’s first-ever event. Some kids even got to take Teddy Bear Sunflower seeds home to start their own garden.

Even though the seeds do not grow into a stuffed animal, event organizers encouraged children of all ages to bring their favorite “lovie” to the festivities. Parents were encouraged to pack their own picnic to enjoy at the park.

Friends of Martin’s Park’s Sierra Rothberg thought the Teddy Bear Sunflower was perfect for the young kids.

“[We wanted to] focus on an event that was geared towards the littles, as the teddy bear sunflower is the smallest of the sunflowers,” said Rothberg. “We just really wanted to create a special event for a little kid and they would imagine would be a fun time.”

One of the highlights of the event was Kevin Driscoll and his talking dog Doug, who put on an interactive, fun, musical show for the children.

The Friends of Martin’s Park took time to educate the kids on sunflowers and other pollinators. The event also included face painting, bubbles, giveaways and many other fun things for the kids to enjoy.
