TEWKSBURY, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Police in Tewksbury have successfully and safely located a patient, who had escaped from Tewksbury State Hospital last weekend.
The escape occurred just before 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Tewksbury State Hospital Campus Police reached out to local authorities to let them know a court-committed patient with a violent history was missing from the facility. At the same time, authorities were tipped off that the patient was potentially spotted in the area of the 99 Restaurant on Main Street.
A short time later, police found the patient and brought them back to the hospital without any problems. Because the patient was located so quickly, officials did not issue an alert to the community.
It remains unclear as to how the patient was able to escape the facility, specifically the C4 Unit. Tewksbury Police said they're working with hospital officials to investigate the incident further.
"We will continue to monitor this situation and voice our concerns about the safety and security of the hospital to ensure the safety of our residents." Tewksbury Police Chief Ryan Columbus said.
