WEYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - The New England Wildlife Center has their hands full after taking in two dozen gulls, completely soaked in used cooking oil. The oil left the birds flightless and in need of serious medical attention.
Officials believe the birds found their way into the back of a truck that was carrying used cooking oil.
"They had apparently been attracted to the smell of fried foods and had landed in the back of the truck where the viscous oil soaked through their feathers." The NE Wildlife Center said. Unfortunately several of the birds did not survive the ordeal.
Specialists at the NE Wildlife Cape Hospital worked well into the night to assess the animals. Over the next couple of days, the animals will be given a chance to rest and de-stress before the washing process begins.
NE Wildlife Center is asking for donations for the birds ongoing rehabilitation.
