BERKLEY, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Berkley Police are ruling out foul play after four puppies fell ill at a local kennel, resulting in the death of two of the young dogs.

Last month, Berkley Police got a phone call from a resident, who owns a kennel, saying they were alarmed by a sudden illness impacting four of their puppies. Two of the animals had passed away from the unknown illness, the two others had been receiving veterinary care. The owner had been concerned the dogs were being intentionally poisoned.

With the help of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) and local veterinarians, Berkley police were able to determine the dogs became ill after contracting canine parvovirus, which is a very contagious dangerous illness, particularly for young, unvaccinated puppies.

The investigation has ruled out any foul play.

"We understand that this has been an unsettling situation in our community, and we wish to thank our residents for their patience during our investigation," Chief Christopher Baker said. "The Berkley Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, including our two- and four-legged ones."
