LAKEVILLE, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the area of Precinct and Pickens Streets early Friday morning.
Around 3:45 a.m., a Lakeville Police officer was working a traffic detail when a man confronted the officer and showed him what looked like a black handgun. The officer quickly moved behind his cruiser to take cover and ordered the man to drop the weapon.
During the ordeal, an off-duty Massachusetts state trooper happened to drive by and stopped to help the officer. Both the trooper and officer ordered the man repeatedly to drop his weapon, but the man refused. At one point, the suspect raised their weapon, which prompted both the officer and trooper to fire their weapons out of fear for their safety.
The suspect was then taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries.
The man will face several charges including assault with a dangerous weapon.
Neither the police officer nor trooper suffered any injuries.
"The Lakeville officer was taken off duty and the service weapons of the officer and trooper have been taken as part of the investigation, as is standard procedure in any police-involved shooting," Chief of Police, Matthew Perkins said.
