HYANNIS, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Heading to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard with the car in tow could cost you more next summer, after the Steamship Authority (SSA) proposed an increase in vehicle rates.

According to budget documents from the SSA, the increase is due in part to growing maintenance costs, which the SSA expects to grow by more than $3 million in 2024. It isn't just maintenance costs, the SSA also expects training for new staff to grow along with insurance expenses.

If the budget is approved, it wouldn't impact passenger fares, however the SSA said they'll raise the vehicle fare by $25 to Nantucket and an additional $10 more to bring your car to Martha's Vineyard. Current prices vary depending on the size of your vehicle, for example it costs $295 each way to take a vehicle under 17 feet in length to Nantucket on the weekends during the summer, slightly more for a vehicle between 17 and 20 feet in length.

The proposed increased rates would vary based on the season and the day of the week.
