BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - Another holiday weekend is upon us and if you're taking advantage of the extra time off, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is out with a reminder as more traffic is expected on our roads. MassDOT is asking those planning to travel to utilize off-peak hours and public transportation, when possible.

“We anticipate higher than normal traffic volume on major roadways beginning on Thursday, October 5,” said Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. “Many people have a three-day weekend and will be traveling around New England to make the most of it. We encourage motorists to make their trips when traffic may be low, check the weather forecasts, consider public transportation, and remember the rules of the road.”

To make things a little bit easier, the Sumner Tunnel will be open for traffic to help tackle any congestion and the MBTA will offer it's $10 unlimited travel pass for the Commuter Rail on all three days, October 7, 8, and 9. What's more MassDOT said they'll shut down construction outside of fixed work zones through the long weekend.

On the rails, the MBTA will operate on a Saturday Schedule on the Monday holiday, and as a reminder, the CharlieCard Store will be closed on Monday, October 9th.

When it comes to Logan Airport, Massport is expecting a surge in weekend travel and is reminding the public to utilize public transportation options to and from the airport, including the MBTA's Blue and Silver Line, as well as Logan Express.
