The 'Loch Fresh Monster' Of Cambridge Is Nothing More Than Driftwood

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - A chunk of driftwood and a long tree branch became the focus at Fresh Pond in Cambridge, as visitors mistook the natural debris for a sea serpent.

"What it turns out to be is just a piece of driftwood and a long branch," said Mark Gallagher of the Cambridge Water Department.

Flyers started popping up this past week, asking the public if they've seen the creature, which was reportedly 15 feet long. The City of Cambridge had to take the flyers down as they violated a City ordinance which prompted more flyers to pop up, claiming the city was trying to hide something.

"That's just Nessie's New England cousin, Freshie," One person said. Others claimed it to be river otters, but were quickly quieted by the voices on the Internet.

"There are no river otters in the area (apparently), so it was probably a prehistoric monster or an alien," another commented.

Again, all that speculation ended with the simple explanation of drift wood.

"And when a driftwood log gets caught up in these bubbles, it creates the perfect illusion." Ranger Tim Puopolo told WBZ's James Rojas. Mystery solved.
