Rhode Island Man Killed In Fiery Crash On I-495 In Plainville

PLAINVILLE, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - A Rhode Island man has died following a fiery crash along Route 495 in Plainville.

Massachusetts state police responded to the crash around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday morning to find a car down the embankment, which was both in several feet of water and simultaneously engulfed in flames. Trooper Bianca Vargas and Trooper Matthew Higgins jumped into action, pulling a man from the water and putting out the flames on the driver's side of the car. A pair of Good Samaritans pulled over to help, while the troopers took turns performing CPR on the driver until EMS arrived.

The man, identified as Sage A. Woodward, was taken to the hospital, where he died. One of the Troopers was hurt during the rescue and had a hand injury treated at a local hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
