Taunton Woman Facing OUI Charges After Crash With Dighton Police Cruiser

TAUNTON, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - A Taunton Woman is under arrest and facing numerous charges after crashing into a Dighton Police Cruiser while allegedly under the influence.

Taunton police responded to reports of a crash involving a police cruiser, Monday evening just before 9:00 p.m. in the area of Winthrop and Burt Streets. Both the cruiser, which belonged to Dighton's department and a brown SUV had major damage, with airbags deployed.

During their preliminary investigation, officers learned the Dighton Police Officer was on their way to a call with their blue lights activated, when the speeding SUV traveled over the double yellow line and hit the cruiser. The Dighton police officer was taken to the hospital and has been released.

The driver of the SUV, now identified as Michelle Sousa, has been charged with a marked lanes violation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, OUI-Liquor, speeding and open container violations. Sousa was also injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.
