BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - An investigation is underway following a deadly accident at an Abington recycling company this week.

According to the Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz, police responded to a 911 call from the Troupe Waste and Recycling facility, Tuesday afternoon just before 2:00 p.m. An employee told officers, a coworker had fallen from a forklift.

When officials arrived, they jumped into action, proving life-saving measures. The man, now identified as Donald Schaefer of Braintree, was taken to the hospital where he died.

In their preliminary investigation, authorities believe Schaefer was working with a pair of coworkers to offload a number of steel container bottoms, using a tractor with a forklift. At some point, Schaefer was "standing on top of one of the loads to provide counterweight, when the load shifted" and he fell to the ground. A number of the steel container bottoms landed on top of the 67 year old.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also investigating.
