FITCHBURG, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Firefighters are ready to respond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and this week in Fitchburg, the department responded to a call they won't soon forget.
Responding to a call around 4:30 a.m., firefighters were tasked with rescuing an opossum, hiding behind a resident's toilet.
Sometime during the night, the small animal had made it's way up three flights of stairs and get inside the apartment unnoticed. The opossum then transformed a corner behind the bathroom toilet into a snuggly resting place. That's where the unsuspecting resident found the creature and called the fire department around 4:30 a.m.
"FFD Pvt. Pike bravely caught the opossum and escorted him out of the residence and back outside," Fitchburg fire department said.
