BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - If you're looking to add a little fur to your family, you're in luck. Starting Friday, the MSPCA-Angell is waiving adoption fees on a number of animals including some dogs and cats, parakeets, pigs and other small animals.

The three day event comes in the midst of a nation-wide dog population crisis as shelters near and far are pushed to their capacity.

“We’ve been focusing a lot recently on finding homes for dogs, which remains a priority given the gravity of the population crisis,” said MSPCA-Angell Director of Adoption Centers and Programs, Mike Keiley. “We had a lofty goal over the summer of helping as many dogs as we possibly could, and, while we did find homes for hundreds, the crisis hasn’t slowed down, nor is it showing signs of slowing down.”

This will be the first time the MSPCA is holding such a "wide ranging adoptathon," waiving fees for more types of animals than previous events in the past. The organization is also hoping to find forever homes for roughly 50 mice, recently surrendered to the MSPCA.

“We’re calling this an adoptathon for our underdogs—animals that are older, have some medical issues or physical challenges, and those that are generally in shelters longer,” explained Keiley. “It’s imperative that we find many of these wonderful animals homes, so that we’ve got the space and bandwidth to care for animals that will need our help in the future."

If you're interested in the upcoming event, please visit the MSPCA's website where animals that will be available in the adoptathon will be marked with special stars indicating their adoption status. You can also head to your local MSPCA facility over the three day event. Locations in Boston, Methuen and Centerville will be open from noon - 3:00 p.m. and the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem will be open between 11:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
