BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — An investigation is now underway in Boston's South End after a statue outside the Cathedral of the Holy Cross was vandalized. Boston Police have arrested 33-year-old Michael Petzelt of Attleboro.

"Unfortunately, the Cathedral experienced vandalism at the exterior crucifix," Terry Donilon, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Boston said. "I have no information regarding why someone would take such an action. It's now in the capable hands of the BPD. The Archdiocese will work with the Cathedral to assess the damage."

Authorities said they responded to the church after getting a call saying someone was vandalizing a statue outside the church.

"The suspect then proceeded to climb up the cross where he began to swing and hang from it, breaking off several parts of the cross," police said. "The suspect broke both the statues arms prior to officers responding and placed him under arrest."

Patzelt is facing charges of assault and malicious destruction of property and is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.

This is a developing story.
