READING, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - November is just a few short weeks away and the Reading Police Department is gearing up to take part in the Home Base No Shave initiative to benefit local veterans and their families.

"Many of our members are veterans themselves so this cause is deeply meaningful to the Reading Police Department," said Chief David Clark. "This effort is aimed at supporting veterans in need and their families, and we encourage community members to join us as we contribute to this cause."

It's the eighth year officers in Reading have opted to put down the razor blade for the month of November and grow out their facial hair and already the department has surpassed their fundraising goal of $1,000.

Reading Police are just one of the departments participating across the state. Last November, 130 departments from all over New England participated in the campaign and raised more than $1.4 Million.
