SOMERVILLE Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Conversations about death and grief can always be difficult, and a subject that many would choose to avoid in favor of a lighter or friendlier topic. However, a pop-up cafe at CultureHouse Union Square in Somerville is seeking to change that, one cup of tea at a time at least.

The cafe is part of a worldwide phenomenon that started in the U.K. known as Death Cafes, where people gather in a room to sip tea and eat sweets while engaged in discussions about what happens to us after we die.

“I think there’s a huge range [of topics] that can come up at a death cafe. They have happened in 89 locations around the world, and they’ve had over 100,000 participants,” said Natalie Sew, one of the facilitators of the cafe. “I think I learned a lot about how people respond to death, some people have really humorous responses, and we actually have quite a lot of laughing which I didn’t expect."
