Massachusetts Fares Well In Study Of Nation's Top High Schools

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — U.S. News and World Report is out with its annual list of the best high schools in the country.

Massachusetts is well represented.

Boston Latin School was ranked 27th out of more than 17,000 schools nationwide.

From the state perspective, Boston Latin School was the state's highest-ranking school.

Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley and Lexington High School were second and third respectively in Massachusetts.

According to the study, the overall top 10 schools in Massachusetts are:

  1. Boston Latin School
  2. Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School, Hadley
  3. Lexington High School 
  4. Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School, Marlboro
  5. Sturgis Charter Public School, Hyannis   
  6. John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, Roxbury
  7. Hopkinton High School
  8. Dover-Sherborn Regional High School
  9. Boston Latin Academy
  10. Acton-Boxboro Regional High School

Massachusetts was the state with the largest proportion of schools in the top 25% of the rankings. Of eligible schools, 47% in the state are in the top quarter. 

The publication said to determine the school rankings, it uses enrollment data from the U.S. Department of Education, state testing results, high school graduation rates, Advanced Placement exam scores, and International Baccalaureate exams.

It said rankings are compiled based on college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, and graduation rate.
