BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The 56th annual Walk for Hunger is set to kick off this Sunday on the Boston Common. The annual event is expected to raise more than $1.3 million to combat the problem of hunger in Massachusetts.

3,500 people are expected to participate in the 3-mile loop walk, which starts and ends on the Boston Common, with live entertainment and local vendors expected to be present as well. There is also expected to be additional walkers participating in the walk virtually from 22 U.S. states and the Netherlands.

The Walk for Hunger supports Project Bread, a nonprofit organization that works to solve the problem of food insecurity in Massachusetts through means of policy, prevention, and partnerships, according to a press release.

Project Bread says approximately 1 in 5 households with children in Massachusetts "struggle with food insecurity," and that the event "raises funds to connect people and communities" with reliable food sources and aims to "make food accessible for all."

The official start time for the walk is at 9 a.m. on the Boston Common.
